Tax Form Update

Fondulac District Library received Notice 1437 (February 2018) from the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, “Information About Your Tax Forms.”

The IRS is reviewing The Bipartisan Budget Act enacted on February 9, 2018, that retroactively extended and modified numerous tax provisions covering 2017. As most tax forms were printed for distribution prior to the signing of new legislation, we recognize this may impact some tax forms ordered. To ensure you have the latest version of the tax product, we strongly encourage you to visit IRS.gov for updates on the implementation of this law. Updated versions of tax forms will only be available on IRS.gov.

Please consider this information if you have IRS-printed federal tax forms as distributed at the library. The IRS will not be re-printing forms or redistributing them to the library. Contact 1-800-829-3676 for more information.

Strategic Plan Update

In April 2016, the library adopted a strategic plan for fiscal years 2017 to 2019 to provide leadership with focus for making decisions related to resource allocation and the achievement of the organization’s vision. Fondulac District Library’s goals for fiscal years 2017 through 2019 are the result of meetings with and input from East Peoria residents and stakeholders, the library’s staff, and the library’s Board of Trustees. As a result of the planning process, the Board adopted the following goals for FY2017:

  • Marketing: Empower the staff to market the library’s resources
  • Services: Provide opportunities for patron collaboration and training
  • Technology: Develop library apps for streamlined mobile access to library services and features

In the past year, library leadership and staff made great strides toward achieving these goals. The library decided to focus on communication of existing services in a more consistent manner, both inside and outside of the library and by using its current marketing practices and additional new methods. Furthermore, library staff collaborated with schools, non-profit organizations, individuals, and businesses to create programs and learning opportunities both at the library and at locations throughout the community.  More than 9,100 people participated in the 553 programs offered by the library in FY2017. Library staff also worked throughout the year to make more information, services, and content available online. A robust mobile-responsive website with new content, 24/7 access to downloadable eBooks and audiobooks, the library catalog’s app and text services, mobile printing, and more provide convenient online access to much of what the library offers.

The library’s strategic plan calls for the library to continue its focus on these same goals in FY2018, and library leadership and staff are looking forward to making further progress in these areas.

Additional background about the plan and a more detailed FY2017 update are available here.

Eclipse Information

[box type=”alert” border=”full” icon=”none”]UPDATE: As of 1 p.m. on August 14, the library has distributed all of the glasses received through the grant and does not have any more free eclipse glasses to give away. Although the library has no more glasses to distribute, we did want to share this link that provides several sets of instructions for making eclipse viewers from boxes and other household supplies. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable eclipse on Monday! [/box]

eclipse glassesIn planning for the Total Eclipse of the Sun on August 21, Fondulac District Library applied for and was fortunate to receive a grant from the STAR Library Network (STAR_Net), with support from the Moore Foundation, Google, NASA, the Research Corporation, and National Science Foundation.  The library has received a limited amount of solar eclipse viewing glasses through the StarNet grant to support the library’s related programs. Participants in any of the library’s astronomy and eclipse related programming through August 10 will receive a pair. (Please see our event calendar at http://fondulaclibrary.evanced.info/signup/calendar for more information about library programming.)

Starting August 11, individuals may come to the Youth Services department at the library to receive a pair while supplies last. Because of the limited availability, the library is unable to fulfill requests from groups or other large requests.

The Riverfront Museum in Peoria is selling safe viewing glasses in the Museum Store (www.peoriariverfrontmuseum.org). Additionally, the National Science Foundation’s American Astronomical Society’s Reputable Vendors page also provide links to resellers who may still have eclipse glasses in stock for purchase. (The library has heard from several sources that many vendors are sold out.)
