Fondulac District Library now offers patrons the ability to submit projects for the library’s Glowforge Plus. The Glowforge is a 3D laser cutter engraver.
Patrons can use the Glowforge Request Form to submit a request to have a project printed with the Glowforge. Staff will review the submission and, if accepted, add the project to the queue. A staff member will notify the patron when the project is completed.
Note: Due to upcoming holiday closures, the Glowforge service may have a longer than normal wait time.
A Glowforge is a CNC laser cutter engraver that uses a laser the width of a human hair to cut, engrave, or score materials such as wood and acrylic. The Glowforge can create physical objects based on designs supplied as digital files.
Please fill out the Glowforge Request Form. If you do not have a URL link to the design, please call the library to speak with a librarian regarding how to submit a Glowforge compatible file.
SVG files are the preferred format which the Glowforge can cut, score, and engrave. PNG and JPEG can only be used for engraving. The Glowforge is also compatible with PDF and other file formats. You can create Glowforge-compatible files from a variety of different software platforms like Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, CorelDraw, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Autodesk 360, and Sketchup.
The maximum printable area is approximately 11 in (27.9 cm) deep and 19.5 in (49.5 cm) wide. It’s reduced somewhat when the laser operates at high speed, as it can take space for the laser to decelerate. If your project is larger than this, we suggest breaking it down into smaller pieces if possible and submitting those as separate requests.
You can create a file using software like Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, or Photoshop.
The Free With Premium list on the Glowforge website is a great resource as long as the design meets our policy requirements. Fondulac District Library has a Premium subscription with Glowforge. Free designs are also available on the Glowforge forum. Please note that Fondulac District Library does not provide assembly and additional hardware or materials with completed requests. Instructions for assembly will be provided when available. Items used for decorative purposes will last longer than those that are in heavy use or daily use.
Library staff are available for printing assistance only. Library staff will do their best to facilitate the printing of a patron’s design. Occasionally, it may be necessary to troubleshoot errors or complications. If you need additional assistance with designing or troubleshooting, please attend one of the library’s workshops.
Print time depends on the complexity of the design. Larger designs will take longer than smaller ones. Also, the engraving function takes longer than cutting. The library will not produce laser cut or engraved projects that take longer than one hour to complete. Requests will be completed on a first come, first served basis.
Patrons do not have to be present while their design is lasered. The library will contact the patron upon its completion. A design will be held for 30 days. Please ask for your object at the drive up window. After 30 days, items will become the property of Fondulac District Library.
