What is the book about? Zietan lives in a world where mech-like aliens seek to invade Huaxia, the only territory on the planet that remains under human control. Huaxia’s borders are protected by a group of people who have the ability to pilot the war machines known as Chrysalises. Each Chrysalis has two pilots, the male pilot and the female concubine-pilot. Zietan’s sister died after being sold off as a concubine pilot. Zietan, now has only one desire…to be chosen as a concubine-pilot, so she can get close to her sister’s killer and exact vengeance.
My Review: I listened to the audiobook version of this title and liked it a lot. I found it to be more engrossing than I first anticipated. The female lead character is definitely a flawed hero. She not only has physical flaws (lotus feet from foot binding), but she also has the character flaw of a murderous disposition. The story is fast-paced and intriguing. I thought this book was a good example of how advanced science could seem like magic to some. To me, this book reads more like science fiction, but the fantastical elements could also be accepted as magical.
Three Words That Describe This Book: Engaging, Dramatic, Scandalous
Give This a Try if You Like…The Night Ends With Fire by K. X. Song, The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang, and Mobile Suit Gundam (manga series).
